The nature reserve “Gaujienas priedes” was established in 1999, and it is also included in the NATURA 2000 list of the European Union’s network of specially protected natural areas. The reserve was created for the protection of the boreal forest, in which one of the main fundamental values is the 150- to 180-year-old pine groves. In the area of 51ha, there are more than 50 pines, 5 western pines and other notable trees.
Several species of protected birds have been found in the area – black woodpecker, gray woodpecker, blue skylark.
In the territory of the nature reserve there is also a cultural monument of national importance – the chapel ruins (Kungu kapliča) and a cultural monument of local importance – the gate of Gaujiena old cemetery.
“Gaujienas priedes” is a popular walking, jogging, cycling and skiing place for local residents. There is also a picnic area with a table and benches near the chapel ruins.
