Cheese House

Cheese House

The only surviving cheese house of its kind in Latvia. The bottom floor was a cellar where milk was stored, and a ladder led to the top floor where cheese was dried. The cheese was in the form of small flat cakes made from cottage cheese mixed with caraway seeds. There were holes in the wall of the hut to allow the cheese to dry and air properly. In later years, the holes have been bricked up. The dried cheese was sold in Riga markets.

The roof of the cheese house bears a weathervane with the inscription ANNO 1763, which indicates the year of its construction.
